How to Get Found in Search Engines

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO for short) is all about getting a website to show up as close to the top of the results as possible in the search engines - such as Google or Yahoo! - when people enter a search phrase relevant to the website.

If you disregard SEO and you have competition online, then your website will likely end up so far from the top of the search engine results that nobody will ever see it. Many people only look at the first page of results and very few ever look past the second page.

Although SEO is a large and complex topic there are some proven, basic techniques that can help you get better results in the search engines for your website - here are three of them:

1. Focus on the Right Keywords

Search and SEO is all about keywords. Who is your target market and what are the most likely terms (keywords) they would be entering into a search engine when they’re looking for what you have to offer? Choose a few of these terms for your keywords.

2. Use Keywords on your Web Pages

Your keywords should appear both in the content that people will see on the pages and also in the code behind it. Use your keywords in the page titles and in headings on your pages as well as in the body content. Remember that your content must make sense to a human reader so don’t put so many instances of your keywords in your content that it detracts from the reading experience.

3. Get Links to your Website

Search Engines consider links to your website as recommendations; your website is relevant with content that people are looking for.
You can get links a number of ways. For example, you can exchange links with other website owners either manually or in a partly automated manner through a link exchange program. Another way is to use the various social networking/media websites.

If you implement the above suggestions then you should be well on the way to improving your search engine rankings. But don’t expect it to happen overnight! SEO is a slow process and it takes time and work to get results.

What To Do Next:

This is really just the basics of SEO – there are many different methods ranging from the simple to the complex. If your website is nowhere to be found when you type into Google the words you think your customers would be searching for, then it’s time for you to focus on SEO.
